A on Grooveshark. A -- Straight Outta Compton Gangsta rap began with Straight Outta Compton , and in all likelihood, it will never be done more effectively. Besides the so-in-your-face-it's-subtle political message, the lyrics, anchored by heavyweights Ice Cube and Eazy-E, were so vicious and visceral, they were immediately captivating whether you loved or hated what they were saying. The impact of this album on hip-hop and America at large was monumental.
The album was so popular, and perceived as so potentially corrupting, the American media had a full-blown moral panic attack. And this was the genius of the album: By representing the gang-filled parts of America that had been subjected to systemic neglect and urban decay, and causing such a stir that mainstream America couldn't help but take notice, voices for the marginalized poor gained an economic foothold in our primarily capitalist society and thus gained some measure of power -- which, despite being compromised by the consolidation of the music industry, has yet to be relinquished.

George T. Soul Outing! Scheinman makes two different kinds of albums—instrumental jazz projects and vocal Americana projects—and this one falls into the latter category. She wrote all 10 tunes, sings lead on seven of them, and she leaves lots of room for improvisation by herself and Frisell. Adding drums to nine tracks is Brian Blade. The lyrics about damaged romantic and family relationships seem more fable-like than autobiographical, but the strong melodies make the stories persuasive.
In any case, those themes are countered and eventually overwhelmed by the more hopeful later themes and by the sheer lyricism of the solos from Frisell and Cowherd. For this new project, the bassist composed nine instrumental pieces about his home state of California and plays them as an unaccompanied, egalitarian duo with Frisell.
Surf music and the British Invasion were the basis for everything that came later, so it was important to go back and look at that foundation again through the lens of 50 years of playing music. They improvise on the tunes, but not as much as you might think. We usually think of jazz musicians tackling pop tunes because listeners will quickly recognize the theme before it gives way to fresh, creative improvisations.
But for Frisell, the main motivation is as much emotional as musical. By reclaiming the elation of his first, stumbling attempts on the guitar with the far more masterful technique of his middle age, he combines the best of both worlds.
There are certain songs that get deeper and deeper into you, the words and the sound. Those Beatles songs are about as rich as you can get.
When I first heard them, I had no idea what a chord was; I was hearing this pure music that burrowed further and further inside me. When I combine that feeling with those musical discoveries, it has a huge effect. Each song becomes its own world. Soon he was playing in a funk band as well as his high school band. He noticed that Ron Carter was playing bass on a lot of these LPs, so he started looking for that name in the cut-out bin, and that led him to Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins.
He got a job teaching guitar in his hometown of Denver, and he would chastise year-old girls who wanted to know how to play a Beatles song by preaching that they should be listening to Charlie Parker. After a few years of this, however, Frisell realized that it made no sense to pretend it was when it was actually Sonny became a heavy inspiration for me, a beacon of what to strive for. But the further I got into his music, I realized he was playing the music he had heard as a kid: show tunes, songs from movies, calypsos.
When I played with Paul Motian, a lot of tunes he chose were from some movie he saw when he was younger. These guys were my heroes, and at a certain point I wanted to understand this process they were using—of going back to the music of their childhoods. Like Frisell, his first instrument was a Fender Mustang guitar. There was something about that modal stuff that reminded me of old folk music. It seemed simple but it was still mysterious and out there.
Playing with Bill brought me into that world full-on. After recording Nashville in with dobro virtuoso Jerry Douglas, Frisell wanted to work with a pedal steel guitarist. He was introduced to Leisz, and the two hit it off, but they had never played together before going in the studio for the Good Dog sessions.
If I hear the Miles Davis Quintet, you can say Miles is playing the melody, but what Herbie is playing is just as profound, the same with Ron and Tony.
Improvising was never an issue, he insists, because he had done a lot of that in country and rock bands. The issue was adjusting to chord changes and scales different from anything he was used to. You go in there, react and trust the abilities you do have. He has arranged some Woody Guthrie music for a concert at Lincoln Center. The Australian filmmaker Emma Franz is finishing up a documentary about Frisell.
Plus, he plays whenever he can with saxophonist Charles Lloyd. I had to relearn all that vocabulary from when I was the reverb and the tremolo, muting the strings, that staccato attack. When I was young, I tried to get more and more complex, which required shutting out so much of my past, thinking that the Beach Boys were on a lower level. John, a larger than life figure and medicine man who claimed to have been a prince in Senegal before he was abducted and taken to Cuba.
In Cuba he had gained freedom and shipped out around the world as a sailor, eventually settling in New Orleans. Through my contacts with gris-gris and spiritual-church people and by reading New Orleans history, I had begun to dig the importance of Dr. John as an early spiritual leader of the New Orleans community. But it was when I read a piece by the 19th century writer Lafcadio Hearn that my head really got turned seriously around. John and one Pauline Rebennack were busted in the s for having a voodoo operation.
So I feel more than an incidental sympathy for the man whose name I took as a stage name in John The Night Tripper, a character that Rebennack occasionally revives when the spirit calls him to do so, like at the Bonnaroo Festival in the wake of Hurricane Katrina that neo-hipster festival was named after Dr.
The good doctor had just been to the doctor after flu symptoms caused him to cancel performances at the Central Park Summerstage and the Newport Jazz Festival the week before, and he was well on his way to recovery. DownBeat: This Armstrong project was four years in the making. How did it come about? John: Yeah, it began in I only kind of knew Louis from his manager Joe Glaser back in the game.
Me and B. DJ: Right. Joe hated that record. Ahmet Ertegun hated that record. Everybody was down on this record and it only sold because it was like a cult thing that that fell in between the cracks of music.
Ralph Schulte could marry you, he could give you break tag stickers, he could do anything at that time. So I knew that place where Louis is sitting in that photo very well. Armstrong was from the same Third Ward neighborhood in New Orleans where you grew up. DJ: Yeah, not far from where I was born. My daddy had a small record shop and he was repairing radios and phonographs and P. There was only three kind of jazz records my pa sold: traditional jazz, Afro-Cuban music and bebop.
And that was it. Because who cared about any other music? That was the real McGillicuddy to my dad. And he knew all of those guys from back in the game, and that was something important to me. DJ: Yeah! DJ: Well, we had to do some figurations.
But we got everybody shifted. Because the few things I had already done for him, he loved. DJ: She has that kind of a genioskitery as an arranger. People very rarely have that. Wardell Quezergue had that. DJ: Oh yes! SM: Wardell was actually supposed to arrange this project and Mac wanted me to do some arrangements with him. He wanted the two of us to work together.
But Wardell passed away just before that [Sept. DJ: Ah, he did slamming stuff on any record he ever did with me. What do you remember about that session? Because when Bu would sing something that had a deep message to it, it was real. DJ: That was kind of my idea, but I totally threw the changes out the window and tried to figure something else out. I used to love his dad, Walter Payton. He was one of the baddest bass players on the planet. He passed not too long ago [Oct.
Speaking of people who passed recently, what about the great Idris Muhammad? DJ: Oh yeah. About a year-and-a-half ago I did a gig with Idris, and he had two snares on that gig. That was a special gig for me. DJ: No, John Boudreaux was my favorite drummer. And then for my second favorite it was between Idris, his older brother Weedy [Morris] and also Edward Blackwell. That was three drummers that was all special in my life.
And I used to use them all. Edward Blackwell was sometimes there, but Idris and Weedy were never there because they were always busy playing sessions. I like how he explains just who this cat Mack the Knife is. SM: I worked with Mike in Europe. And I thought that he said something profound on this track. He sent us two rough takes and Mac was blown away by both of them. It almost feels more menacing than playful … a little undercurrent of darkness there.
SM: Yeah, we worked together up in Canada. Really, it was a fusion of tango and a hip-hop groove. I wanted him to play something on that track, and he played his ass off. The only person I ever saw play timbales like that was Tito Puente.
Tell me about your history with Bonnie. DJ: We always seemed to be around each other back in the game. SM: It was so cool to see them interact in the studio on that tune. It was just very natural the way they did that bantering back and forth. I was trying to get a backways feed on it. I had the idea to change the beat to 1 and 3, but Herlin [Riley] pulled it away from that and I thought what he came up with was very hip.
There was just so much great musicalness out of that family, and Frankie played the best drums I ever heard. Herlin was always, as a kid, playing trumpet in the church. I never heard him play the drums until way later. But Herlin sounds great on the whole record.
DJ: This is how things work, in weird and mysterious ways. And you know what? DJ: You know what? I feel very spiritually connected to everybody who was on this record. Not one person who oversold their bidness or undersold their bidness. And I feel good about that. SM: Tom Malone did the horns arrangement on that one, and Mac was very specific about how he wanted it to be voiced. We were all playing together at the session, and Herlin took it into that half-time groove, which was not the original idea.
And he kills it here! I like how trumpeter James Andrews plays so far behind the beat on that one. What matters is the fact that he played his ass off and sounded like his uncle Melvin. SM: We went through a lot of different renditions before we started fooling around in the studio and hit on this reggae vibe. But, as Evans hinted while sipping soup a couple of hours before he would hit the bandstand, the celebration would be tempered by a subtext of social concern that is part and parcel of who he is.
As he spoke, the embers were already smoldering. Amid a lament for the once-commonplace 1 a. There was so much energy here. Dirty, and much better. Watching Allen come off the bandstand, it was easy to understand why. The bassist died at age 43 on Dec. Not all the songs the group played were freighted with that kind of emotional weight. The only hole I want to be put into is Orrin Evans. He turned a general assignment in the sixth grade into a demonstration in which he played a Casio keyboard.
That caught the ear of a music teacher, who referred him to the prestigious Girard Academic Music Program. Soon after, he met Messiah Harley, the trumpet-playing son of jazz bagpipes player Rufus Harley. The Harley father-son image was never far from his mind.
He came in contact with faculty members like guitarist Ted Dunbar and pianist Kenny Barron, who taught him life lessons. The milieu in New Brunswick, New Jersey, had long been one of social ferment and progressive discourse, to which the elder Evans contributed significantly, writing plays for the Crossroads Theatre Company. The son left short of a degree. He sat in, and by the end of the night, the owner had asked him if he wanted a job.
For the next two years, Evans managed the club. At the same time, he led groups. Finally, in , he moved to a flat in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn. He was more advanced than all of us, a lot more mature in his abilities, his confidence in playing. In fact, he spent an inordinate amount of time comparing musicians from the City of Brotherly Love with those from the Big Apple. But there are drummers in Philly who play on top of the beat and drummers in New York who play behind the beat.
It was actually personal. With that common history as a backdrop, the younger Evans and Waits connected at jams in Brooklyn. In perhaps its most potent form, the medium for the message has been Tarbaby. The core group, in addition to Evans and Waits, includes bassist Eric Revis. Expect to be confronted. They play about what they talk about. What it is, is acknowledging the history; I play this music that comes from a rich tradition and heritage of black America, point blank.
The spot might not be in Harlem or the Village, but it does sit within a cultural district where a pool of informed patrons can be found. And this recreation is so accurate, it is literally an echo of its parent. It is a new standard of precision by which jazz may reconstruct its remembered passions. Having said that, does any of this have much point? Other iconic works have received their homages. All are worthy efforts.
But each reserved for itself various measures of interpretative space, presumably an essential quality of jazz theory that this formidable quintet denies itself completely. But on the club and concert circuit, it has much to offer—the chance for millions to hear one of the most famous jazz works of the 20th century live.
The distinction is not a trivial one. Music has a physical quality of theater that is beyond a CD. One could argue, of course, that the greatness of Kind Of Blue lives less in the notes themselves than in the living chemistry and tension beneath the notes, something that cannot be recaptured.
They not only get the notes but the music right. But the music and the moment are here in their glory. Ordering info: hotcuprecords. Touching on tracks that he recorded while a member of the David S. The former splits the difference between brooding and elegant, insinuating the sensitive tune into a heavy atmosphere.
On the latter, before restating the main theme, Shipp hits a static spot, building tension through amassed repetitions. Ordering info: thirstyear. Bunnett sets three elements in motion here: her new all-women ensemble from Cuba, a brace of voices and a string quartet. Directing all this action is the job of a leader who can hear how the rich exchanges need to share space.
Bunnett excels, because as she and the members of Maquegue romp through this effervescent program, they bring a pop-like pith to each track. But its attractions are many, and its message is important. By mentoring these up-and-comers, Bunnett is investing in the future and putting impressive women improvisers in the game. Ordering info: justin-time. Schmit 7 , background vocals; David Foster, William Ross, arrangements. Ordering info: vervemusicgroup. A difficult stunt, pulled off pretty handily.
Something like a Sherrie Levine artwork—mimicry undermining the authority of authenticity. Where does the rigor of repertory end? Or is it? So four stars for daring to do it, and doing it well. From his right hand, jumpy, zigzagging and hammering clusters rotate with expressive lyrical interludes, while his left often rumbles with an undertow of dark, swelling drama.
Gently adventurous without becoming severe. Wide-ranging solo piano. Though creatively crafted, the strings and floating wordless vocals evoke afternoon on a seaside terrace—lush, smooth, warm and pleasing to the skin. Uncredited strings fill with nice support, holding together a cocktail of Cuban pop jazz.
But they all arrive on the snoozy side—the result of an all-ballad program or perhaps the choice of overexposed songs. Her breathy, wee-small-hours melancholy makes these songs sound much better than they seemed then, though lyrical ambition was often paid for in melodic distinction.
But if what they say about imitation and flattery is true, Sam Phillips should feel very good. A little too close for comfort. As a supergroup of star veterans, they could have easily slapped charts on the stands and come up with tremendous blowing sessions. But these gunners are not mercenary loners. The Cookers were born a true teamwork band, and that identity is even stronger now.
Even at that intensity, Harper still manages to build upwards. Pianist George Cables is a fount of endless ideas and his effortless comping meshes every groove. Alongside the album Gwyn has also developed an ambitious new live show with these songs at its heart, collaborating with an extraordinary creative team including her band, video designer Will Duke, director Susannah Tresilian and designer Tom Rogers, exploring how we communicate, and trying to find a more meaningful way of connecting with ourselves and the world.
The album arrangements are full of ear-catching detail, from tintinnabulating toy pianos and glockenspiels to Herbert's own multi-layered backing vocals, with the circuitous song structures often leading to codas of quite breathtaking emotive power'.
Details : Video :. Westbrook's enduring creative partnership with his wife, the singer, lyricist and painter Kate Westbrook is represented by two songs they wrote together. Starcross is a rail station nearby the Westbrook home in Devon, near Plymouth where his creative life began all those years ago.
His title track is dedicated to the tenor saxophonist Lou Gare, whose death in was a particular wrench. Starcross Bridge is an intricately woven network of musical and personal references'. Philip Clark, album notes. Starcross Bridge is, if it's at all possible, even more intimate and elusive than 's Paris We hear through a veil, often of tears. And yet it is in that witnessing of an artist easing yet pleading, sometimes blithely at one with his art, at others challenged and defeated, that the beauty and strength prevails Starcross Bridge is a rail crossing close to Westbrook's Dawlish home.
One side the sea, on the other a cosy pub. And that's what this release brings us: wide wild vistas on one side, hunkered down delight, warm with detail on the other The music is broad ranging from psychedelia to jazz rock to free form improv to simple pop-ish tunes to hypnotic mood pieces. The band plays material from the era compositions by Hugh Hopper, Mike Ratledge and Karl Jenkins as well as many contemporary works.
The recording features new compositions by the band, group improvisations and interpretations of two Soft Machine classics - from 'Third' and 'Bundles'. Whilst the line-up of Soft Machine may have changed many times since the heady days of the late 's, the band's spirit of musical adventure, and the ease with which it freely avoids being pigeon holed and can move from powerful progressive jazz fusion to atmospheric psychedelia to free improvised jazz-rock to ambient loop music, continues to make it both unique and totally contemporary'.
This is the Softs as questing and rocking as ever Blending their mutant jazz sensibilities with spacey electronics and post rock atmospheres, 'Bristopia' ventures into new, unexplored territories. From the jagged, interweaving brass patterns of opening track 'If It Can It Will', through the brooding atmosphere of 'Bristopia' and absorbing, haunting melodies of 'Not With Standing', the Bristolian quintet channel subterranean depths and soar from dizzying heights, leading the listener through a complex labyrinth of tangled melodies and sliding soundscapes of dark, immersive production.
Having been conceived, born and raised in Bristol, the band now pay tribute to their hometown with an album that careers around the city's one-way system not always in the correct direction of travel , darting into some of its hidden alleyways and lesser-known night-time hot-spots, and occasionally just stopping to take in the dizzying vistas of sprawling buildings and distant hilltops.
With this powerful return, Get The Blessing send their sonic transmission deep into the furthest corners of the universe, setting the pace for the current UK Jazz revival, demonstrating that the early pioneers of the scene still have something important to say'.
Atmosphere combines unpredictably with groove, trumpet solos that float pensively in space, and diverse melodies and emotions grip sufficiently to ensure these pioneers' ongoing worth'. The album, issued in CD and vinyl formats, presents six originals by Iverson among them the nostalgic solo tune "Yesterday's Bouquet" and two by Turner including "Myron's World," which has acquired near-classic status among contemporary jazz players.
There's an off-kilter blues "Unclaimed Freight" and a strikingly melodic, almost Ravelian opening track dedicated to the Swiss town where the album was recorded "Lugano" , plus an interpretation of Marsh's playfully serpentine "Dixie's Dilemma.
A decade after their first meeting, the saxophonist and pianist began an association in the Billy Hart Quartet, the two players featuring sympathetically on two widely lauded ECM albums by that band' album notes.
Temporary Kings aggregates nine compositions - six by Iverson, two by Turner and one by Warne Marsh - that, besides bristling with competence, allow for space, reflection, and expansion.
Ten years after meeting for the first time in New York, the two distinguished players and members of the Billy Hart Quartet release their first duo album on the ECM label Temporary Kings is a guileless jazz session whose bi-directional moves converge and diverge with an astounding conviction' JazzTrail. The band features habitual co-workers Erica Lindsay on tenor saxophone and Francesca Tanksley on piano, both contributing with originals, plus Vienna-based bassist Uli Langthaler Sonic Creed , a reflection on African American life in our times, comprehends inspiring explorations of tunes by masters such as Bobby Timmons, Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, and Abbey Lincoln, plus a tribute to Michael Jackson and a couple of original compositions that go perfectly well with the rest of the material Filled with gorgeous ideas, Sonic Creed offers a smooth voyage to the world of jazz masters with imaginative, regenerating sounds deep-rooted in the powerful African American culture'.

Drawing from several musical and cultural Puerto Rican traditions, saxophonist Miguel Zenon takes the concept to a completely different level on Yo Soy La Tradicion , recipient of 8 chamber-like pieces written for alto sax and a quartet of strings.
With the help of The Spektral Quartet - Clara Lyon and Maeve Feinberg on violin, Doyle Armbrust on viola, and Russen Roles on cello - the saxophonist validates his own identity, exploring the Puerto Rican roots and heritage with compositional virtuosity Yo Soy La Tradicion is a chamber tonic for the ears.
Its complexities, in form and tempo, are hidden through cerebral arrangements that permit an intuitive readability of the music. Because in music, demanding executions usually require demanding listenings, get ready for the challenges this CD offers'. The group made this one "by accident", unaware that their August performance at Jazz Middelheim in Antwerp had been recorded by the festival.
On listening, they felt that it captured the soul of things rather well, "maybe because there was no awareness of playing to the microphone". Unselfconsciously dynamic and outgoing, the trio draws an enthusiastic response from the audience. You can hear that in this recording. As Jazz Journal has noted, "Wasilewski's music celebrates a vast dynamic range, from the most deftly struck pianistic delicacies to gloriously intense emotional exuberance, the chords pounded with unrestrained joy, yet always within a marvellously melodic concept.
On Live , Wasilewski follows the same methodology that hailed him as a spellbinding pianist whose charming jazz propagates warmness and comfort.
The material speaks to me gracefully and the trio rises to the occasion with inventive interpretations of an excellent set of songs'. The music on 'Lazuli' began as improvisation, and then later on I've had the chance to do minor adjustments and edits on the tracks. We seem to hear what might be snuffling animals or squelching sci-fi film FX alongside random clicks and glitches or rumbling, ominous, industrial machine-hum, together with gentler sounds from a more lyrical or pastoral realm: snatches of sleigh or shepherd bells, perhaps the mystical half-echo of a tamboura drone.
As the ambient sounds have themselves been triggered by the trumpet through various electronic plug-ins or captured by re-processing the instrument's total sound-making potential, from blowing to sucking to playing as percussion, there is no real gap between one and the other, reinforcing the organic nature of the entire artistic process, from first puff to final parp'. Norway's Hilde Marie Holsen creates bewitching soundscapes using her trumpet and an array of electronics.
She compares her work to visual art Sometimes Holsen's sound paintings are vast to the point of infinite, but there are also moments of incredible intimacy, when it feels like quick-winged moths are tickling the nooks and crannies of your ear. After the album ends, the silence is deafening.
You almost feel bereft'. Lars Danielsson bass, cello ; Paolo Fresu trumpet, flugelhorn. The timely arrival of Summerwind, a minor masterpiece, shows us what so much of jazz today is missing. Teachers and students take note. A duo configuartion means there is nowhere to hide - every note has to count.
Fresu's beautiful tone, melodic erudition and sheer craftsmanship presents endless lines of well-polished melodic development burnished by years of experience.
Danielsson too is no stranger to valuing and caressing melody They both know their subject inside out, but they do not seek to flaunt their knowledge. Rather they gently use their combined wisdom to reveal deeper meaning The album, recorded at Studios La Buissonne in February , and produced by Manfred Eicher, features six compositions by Wolfgang Muthspiel and one by Brad Mehldau, plus group improvisation.
It is issued in both CD and vinyl formats'. Though Muthspiel albums incline nowadays toward a mix of solo meditations and probing collective speculations over nailed-down grooves, there's a good enough balance of both for this set to intrigue both freefall-jazz voyagers and pursuers of blues and leftfield perceptions of swing It's as classy a session as the personnel would imply, if extendedly pensive at times'.
Details and Samples when available :. For us at Mosaic, it's the "find" that has us re-examining an era we thought we knew inside out. And now, for listeners, it's an historic and fleeting opportunity to own a treasure trove of previously unknown music. Mosaic Records presents "The Savory Collection" - six CDs with tracks locked away for more than 70 years and finally available on CD for the very first time anywhere. The recordings are from the personal collection of Bill Savory, a quirky and secretive studio engineer in New York whose day job in the late s and early s was transcribing radio broadcasts for foreign distribution, and whose nighttime passion was turning on the disc recorders to pull in and preserve what was happening in the clubs of New York City and other cities It would be prohibitive to try and list the highlights, but a couple that need to be mentioned are the six-minute ' Body And Soul ' by Hawkins amplifying his then recent single and a minute slow 'Blues' by Hampton featuring Charlie Shavers and Herschel Evans Details, more information and Samples :.
Perhaps better known as a writer and arranger, influenced by the great Tadd Dameron with whom he played with from , Benny Golson was none the less a very fine tenor sax player as noted in our four fine selections.
On our selections Benny is joined by the likes of Kenny Dorham, J. That should give you some idea of the esteem Benny Golson was held in and the classic jazz company he kept'. Johnny Griffin; Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis tenor saxophones with various personnel. These two titans of the tenor sax both had wildly prolific careers but somehow found the time to come together as a hard blowing unit from Discovering they had compatible styles on their chosen tenors the pair decided to form their famous quintet where you will hear, rather than perhaps the expected cutting sessions, their styles perfectly complimenting each other.
This was of course greatly helped by the fine band of jazzmen accompanying them, from the delicate piano of Junior Mance to the subtle but forceful rhythm section of Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums.
From a young age she was travelling around the country appearing in night clubs from Detroit to Indianapolis to Cleveland and to St. Louis and to Harlem in New York, where she was discovered by Capitol Records producer Dave Cavanaugh who promptly signed her to a recording deal with Capitol. Dakota made many highly acclaimed albums in the s and s and we have included five here for your listening pleasure. There may be more to come! Our original sales notes to accompany our first acclaimed Dakota Staton release promised more to come.
Well it's not five albums this time but four, but hey, when they are this great, it's quality not quantity that counts! Details : Listen to an earlier release of 'Round Midnight :. Freddie Hubbard trumpet, flugelhorn ; Carl Randall, Jr.
Features Carl Randall, Jr. Digitally remastered and slipcased; Extensive new notes album notes. Good document of a musician whose influence on several generations should not be overlooked'. From the first notes Bloomer is impactful, youthful and energetic, but it's Barford's contribution that hits you immediately: this is an artist with something to say! His sound is immediate, bold and fluent and he's an improviser adept at resoucing a vast bank of harmonic language.
The influence of US saxophonists Seamus Blake or Chris Potter are there, but an original and distinctive new voice is clear and present'. This is a group who really relish playing together, and the sound and intention behind this music is one that has hugely evolved in the ten years the band have been playing together. The orchestra has recorded nine self-penned compositions and arrangements that show case the rich and diverse musical influences from Brazilian, African, Cuband, Caribbean, Indian and Middle Eastern cultures'.
The music is alive, vibrant and engaging and offers an aural punch that only a great big band can deliver. Incidentally, the band's curious name derives from the compliment Airto Moreira pays to his band in his Brazilian accent: "Ban San Goo," which actually means "Band Sounds Good! PeterQuinn, The Arts Desk. Formed in , they have performed widely across Europe and taken their engaging grooves, irresistible rhythmic energy and breathtaking group interplay to concert stages and festivals across the world from Morocco to Brazil and Australia to North America where the trio returned in the summer of for a tour of seven jazz festivals.
But in its title and scope, it also seeks to focus attention on an important message of togetherness and balance beyond the one the trio demonstrate on the bandstand'. Edition Records. Since releasing their debut recording back in - 'Spirit', the quartet have been busy touring clubs and festivals across the UK, delighting audiences with their unique sound, group interplay and shared passion for strong, melodic material and the jazz tradition.
The band's repertoire has evolved naturally over time and this album features familiar and lesser-known standards together with original pieces written by Karen and Nikki. Highlights include a great version of Monk's "Pannonica" as well as the little heard, deceptively simple tune by bassist Ron Carter, "Little Waltz" but everyone will find their own delights within this album. Far from being a horn with accompanying trio, Karen's quartet features each voice to its fullest without ever undermining the integrity of the group, with fine contributions by all' album notes.
Each player is given space to air their artistry with Sharp taking the lead, of course, her slightly languid sound perfectly caught, with Iles spinning out cherishable commentaries and then soloing with the kind of nimble alacrity that seems to mark all her appearances A graduate of The Royal Academy Of Music aged 16 later being made an ARAM for services to music John became an avid disciple of the late Bill Evans and also absorbed the music of the European composers Debussy, Ravel and even Brahms which he welded into his own very special jazz language.
This intimate solo album, full of melodic invention and sophisticated harmony, features five free pieces, where a figure is played spontaneously and developed randomly, without any preconceived idea of where it might lead. There is just one of Horler's own compositions a melancholy tune in A major, called "Piece for Poppy" Dave Gelly described John's playing best when he wrote "Horler has a delightful habit of lulling you into a sense of false security with sweet, simple phrases and warm chords, before suddenly heading off into the harmonic undergrowth.
Little scraps of melody, which at first seem quite random, gradually come together into a fascinating pattern. Details : Samples : Review :. Such is the level of trust and friendship across the group that they perform entirely from memory, effortlessly switching between super-tight ensemble playing and generous soloistic expression in the same way as a trio or quartet.
A driving force of the vibrant Manchester music scene and one of the most striking ensembles of its kind, the group continues to win new fans and friends across Europe and beyond.
There's a hunger and intensity to the solos and the personnel's execution of Cottrell's arrangements that attests to their shared conviction over the past decade' Selwyn Harris in Jazzwise. Details and Sample : Video of Nois :. They're joined by Craig Taborn, on piano and electronics, and Ches Smith on percussion.
In addition to quartet improvisations, they also broke off into every possible subset of duo and trio configurations. The group also recorded two compositions by Smith and one by Holland. A resulting 23 tracks present a series of deep, multi-layered conversations between the musicians, some of whom were interacting for the first time'. The ability and competence to play in a variety of settings - from post-bop to free jazz and from solo to big band - with a voice of his own are remarkable.
For his new quartet recording, Uncharted Territories , Holland teams up with the adventurous English saxophonist Evan Parker, inventive pianist Craig Taborn and multi-faceted percussionist Ches Smith, both American. This comprehensive adventure consists of a double record mostly composed of improvised material - in duo, trio, and quartet configurations - selected from a two-day recording session. Except for three scored compositions, they entitled the 23 tracks with a code that indicates the instrumentation, the day they recorded it Tuesday or Wednesday The entire program, manifesting the individual freedom and collective unity of four confident risk-takers, folds into amorphous figures, passionate interplay, and irregular trajectories pelted with rugged and decorous textures'.
The super group heads off into swinging, heartfelt and sophisticated new territory inspired by saxophonist giant Wayne Shorter. Two of Shorter's pieces receive special treatment. A truly fantastic and original group playing new originals and music by Shorter'. Their high caliber rhythm section - pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda May Han Ho, and drummer Joey Baron - spends time creating intuitive bounces that would better serve the soloists while solidifying rapport This is a great comeback from Sound Prints, whose effervescent and sagacious playing sounds pretty damn good.
At 81, he's still playing with the passion of a man at least half his age and his ace pupil Eric Alexander continues to grow'. Same for the fans fortunate to witness, to share the depths of the artistry and exploration happening on stage. There were tears, too, as Williams reached inside herself for expressions of love, longing and loss in equal measures.
But the image that remains strongest from this remarkable night is of Lloyd, radiant and enchanted, at times not even playing, just taking in the wonders of this grouping that had come together around him.
That same energy and elation buzzed through the compact sessions in a Los Angeles studio that brought us the luminescent music heard on this album, Lloyd and Williams with the singular set of talents that comprise the Marvels Blue Note.
Drawing inspiration from the roots of American music, the band effortlessly coat these songs with a charming charisma. Neil Spencer in The Guardian. The duo has been performing extensively throughout the years, but their mature sense of impromptu comes bolstered throughout these 15 spontaneous short tunes.
In possession of an enviable originality in terms of sound and language, the pair takes the same direction and overcomes any possible generational gap with their modernistic facility Wielding a delightfully quirky style, Konitz and Tepfer provide the listener with those truly magical moments that will keep them sigh with pleasure'.
This new release by Eclectic Maybe Band has a great vibe and atmosphere to it. Although improvised the outcome is stylistically varied. Really flexible and great sounding bass and drums provide an ever shifting backdrop.
The guitar is angular, surprising, expressive, a real stand out performance. Flute is the main horn at the forefront, blown by the wind eerily back and forth over the tracks, with the saxes digging in occasionally.
Very original use of keys here too, especially when a rather icy grand piano cuts in. These initial improvisations have been carefully restructured in post production by Guy to produce a result very much in keeping with the Discus Music spirit album notes. Chris Meloche guitar and electronics ; Martin Archer woodwind and electronics ; Gino Robair percussion and electronics ; Lyn Hodnett voice. Trance-like minimal loops and drones from Canadian electronics composer Meloche orchestrated by Archer with improvised percussion and voices from Robair and Hodnett.
A unique meeting of minimalism and improv album notes. I invited my long term colleague Lyn Hodnett, who specialises in very high frequency vocal improvising, to record a session.
Then I set things up so that my playing would trigger a cloud of vaguely related randomised Lyns to each note I played I used the same technique in Part 2 to trigger a whole group of saxophones from my alto sax We think it's unusual to combine static and active elements together in this way, with a whole load of detail dancing around over the drone material P, Personal Yoga. One big difference is chat Sanctuary is in the basement and includes a skate ramp, while Exquisite Corpse had a more prominent presence facing Maple Street.
Corpse also maintained a fairly high level of artistic quality. It remains to be seen what sort of aesthetic identity Sanctuary will project in the coming months. The debut show showcased mixed-media works on skateboards. For its second exhibit the gallery is presenting "Perfect Day: Original Works of Personal Expression," featuring nine young "progressive, street-style artists" from Canada.
Some of the style seems to be non-tagging graffiti without words, influenced more by comic books, caricatures and pop culture than museum works or art history. In other words, the show speaks to what these artists have absorbed from modern culture, rather than to what academicians and critics might suggest that visual artists ought to know about.
Some historical influences are evident — from Pop Art to German Expressionism — but those sources seem to have been examined secondhand, if at all, and only superficially understood. If the pieces have titles, they are not divulged here. The phone number of a dealer in Montreal is posted along with the name of each artist, presumably so that one could call to get the titles and prices.
If you go to buy, best to bring a cell phone. Several of the artists don't employ "conventional" names,. All are rendered in nauseating colors — pastel blues, pinks, orange and yellow that would be fine on black velvet but don't have quite the same impact on the white backgrounds EGR prefers.
The work is completely devoid of content; it's not even interesting enough to be considered decent kitsch. Another artist is called "Other. The paintings of Montrealer Luc Paradis are more interesting. Many of his pieces were produced specifically for this exhibition, and a few have areas of color that extend onto the gallery wall. One of these is a pair of feet standing in a puddle of yellow ocher, with a stylized drip of the yellow beneath the painting.
Another is of two men facing right on a flat red background. One of them holds a cross, while a row of yellow hills undulates along the horizon and off to the right of the painting. Tracey Custodio is another painter of the flatcolor genre, which is definitely influenced by Pop Art. Custodio's pieces are like poorly drawn Warhols, with black lines and monochromatic backgrounds, but they feature kids rather than celebrities and cultural icons.
One painting depicts a girl with a pierced tongue snarling at the viewer; another a scruffy guy with an atrophied right arm. The deformity seems unintentional, suggesting perhaps that figure-drawing classes are in order. Sanctuary Artsite claims to emphasize "the artist's search for truth amidst modern-day hype and information overload," and that is a laudable goal. But presenting shows that seem to be all hype is an odd way to achieve it. Come out and tour Burlington's diverse offering of galleries and art spaces, the First Friday of every month.

This has always been a restless nation and, in the industrial age, the earliest motion pictures began to really move.
The Great Train Robbery had a more thrilling momentum than other short,' black-and-white silents back in An instant sensation, it astonished audiences with a story about outlaws who hijack a locomotive. Americans were hooked. In the century that followed, our collective need for speed propelled every kind of on-the-go cinema imaginable. Road movies became an enduring genre, and filmmakers continue to calculate that you can rarely go wrong with a chase sequence. From to , Mack Sennett's Keystone Kops were a slapstick police force with a.
The late s and early s ushered in screwball comedies often populated by the sophisticated set — think Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart in The Philadelphia Story — with automobiles befitting their lavish lifestyle.
To escape the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, they load all their belongings onto a rickety truck and head for what they hope will be prosperity in California.
Preston Sturges tackled poverty in Sullivan's Travels, a bittersweet tale about a Hollywood director riding the rails as a hobo.
The purpose was to research a gritty portfalt of hard times, a feature to be called O Brother, Where Art Thou? In the juvenile delinquency craze of the s, The Wild One offered Marlon Brando in a motorcycle gang, and Rebel Without a Cause featured James Dean in a deadly game of hotrod chicken.
Ironically, that cinematic decade ended by going back. Sennett's studio recruited Charlie Chaplin in , the year his Kid Auto Races in Venice marked the first appearance of the character , that would soon define him: the Little Tramp. Westerns came into their own around this time, but the cowboy saga didn't really rev up until The Covered Wagon in A year later, The Iron Horse traced the building of the transcontinental railroad.
Buster Keaton also used a train motif in The General, the comics masterpiece about a Confederate engineer during the Civil War. The modern gangster movie, which emerged in a society intoxicated by Prohibition, had its genesis in three classics between and Little Caesar, Public Enemy and Scarface. Fast, snazzy cars were crucial for rum-running.
And don't forget the pedaling Elliot with his extra-terrestrial pal on the handlebars silhouetted against a full moon in E. In the fast and furious excursion of life, may the projector reels keep on turning. Movies like Gidget and Beach Blanket Bingo washed ashore during the early s, with surfboard-obsessed teens driving dune buggies and "woodies. The last 30 years have been a vicarious joyride for moviegoers: they joined the perpetually cruising teens of American Graffiti in ; witnessed the violent spectator sport of Rollerball in ; held on tight for Mel Gibson's.
As you can guess from her name, Fickle Fannie is hard to predict. Her likes and dislikes change from one week to the next.
This week, as always, the things she likes allfollow a secret rule. Can you figure out what it is? Keep in mind that Fickle Fannie likes words. But each week she likes something different about them—how they're spelled, how they sound, how they look, what they mean, or what's inside them. Difficulty rating for this puzzle: medium.
If you're stuck, see the upside-down HINT on this page. So much for Fickle Fannies tastes this week. Next week shell have a whole new set of likes and dislikes. Join a carpool or vanpool, and share driving with a friend or co-worker! That the picture lives up to it. Not since the heyday of Fellini, I dare say, has there been such a merry-go-round of a movie. For the past two or three weeks, Mike Myers was everywhere you looked.
Ted Turners networks played the first two films. And played them again. Talk shows morning, noon and night interviewed the new movie's cast and ran clips. Newspapers and magazines did Goldmember features. Everyone in the media wanted a piece of the party. Though "party" is not quite the right word anymore. The release of a new Austin Powers film has come to assume the significance of a national celebration, an occasion on a par with a major holiday.
This is unprecedented in movie history, unless you count the brouhaha preceding the two recent Star Wars prequels — events which smacked of good marketing far more than good times. More than anything, what the spontaneous coast-to-coast bursting-into-smile has brought to my mind are the early days of the British invasion and the way America embraced The Beatles. Historians are fond of explaining the phenomenon by pointing to the Kennedy assassination, the dark mood of the country in its wake, and the fact that Americans were desperate for something to feel good about.
Certainly there are parallels here. In the aftermath of September 11 and the nosedive taken by the nation's economy, Americans are once again. And once again the answer has arrived by way of Liverpool — ancestral home of the Myers clan — mop-topped and in Cuban-heeled boots. Ironically, the comedian's tongue-in-cheek homage to the swinging '60s has turned out to be the fabbest addition to pop culture since the original four. Myers and director Jay Roach pull out all the " stops in Goldmember, essentially dispensing with plot and allowing the picture to unspool as a freewheeling series of inspired skits and sight gags.
Destiny Child's Beyonce Knowles is along for the ride in the role of an old flame Powers plucks out of the disco era and brings back to the present day. Michael Caine, who played his share of swinging spies in the '60s, is the perfect choice to play the international man of mystery's old man. And added to the list of characters brought to Latex-assisted life by Myers himself — Powers, Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard — is the title character, a Dutch meteorological hedonist who has dreams of world conquest, a problem with flaking skin and one extremely valuable private part.
Sort of a supersized "Laugh In" with the flavor of a madhouse free-for-all, the movie is not without lulls, but overall it generates more comic energy per screen minute than the rest of the summers laughathons combined. And it may very well make more money than all of them, too. The film's opening weekend was the largest in history for a comedy.
What can I say? If you thought the first and second in the series were groovy, you're going to love the third. Here's hoping Powers, Mini Me and 2 all decide there's going to be a 4. Dear Cecil, I believe the "pacemaker danger" signs people put up around microwave ovens are silly and baseless. Surely they springfrom some lawyer worried about a suit. Please tell us the real deal. But I can understand your feelings, Nuke. No harm in being prepared. As you rightly suspect, current medical opinion is that concerns about microwave ovens frying your pacemaker are, if not silly and baseless, certainly exaggerated given the precautions currently taken in manufacturing these devices.
But it's no fun being a journalist if you can't scare the pants off people once in a. I scoured the medical journals for microwave horror stories.
Experiments established that the electromagnetic field generated by the high voltage was interfering with the man's pacemaker. There are subtle but important distinctions between the three forms,. Question: I got hurt on the job. My employer told me not to file a Workers' Compensation claim and he paid my doctor bills. Now, my doctor says I need surgery and my employer won't help.
Is it too late to file a claim with Workers' Compensation? Garrow Answer: No. It may not be too late. The law requires all Oregon employers to carry insurance to cover the job injuries. Some employers discourage their employees from filing claims for financial reasons, but if you were hurt on the job you can make a claim for compensation including medical benefits. Generally, a notice of injury should be made as soon as possible, even if you don't go to the doctor right away, but at least within 90 days of the accident.
If your employer had notice of the injury, you may have up to a year to file a claim. You should contact someone experienced in handling on-the-job injury claims as soon as possible because there are some time limits that cannot be missed. The State of Oregon Workers' Compensation Division also has people who can advise you how to file a claim. Question:Will the statelien my home if I go on Medicaid?
Answer: If you are married and one of you is able to continue living in your home Medicaid will not lien your home for thecost of care it pays on behalf of the spouseneeding long-term care. As long as onespousecontinues to live in your home it will be an "excluded resource" Will Dennis and not counted as anassetwhen applying for Medicaid long-term care benefits. There is a limitation on the amount of equity that is protected. That means that as long as the equity in your homedoesnot exceedthat amount it will be excluded as an asset when qualifying for Medicaid.
However, in the event you both have to leave your hometo enter foster care, assisted living or a nursing home, then Medicaid will count your entire home equity as an available resource. The same is true if only one of you is living and has to leave the home for care needs.

This is far one of the best album by Johnnie Taylor This Bitter Earth this rendition of this bitter earth is so very well done by Johnnie Taylor I had to play over, and over.

And with Johnnie Taylor, they created some of the best Blues and Soul records ever made, and they are all but forgotten about today. And I say to you, after all that, Ruby Johnson was their best kept secret. An enigma, a mystery. What happened!
In Thankfully six years before her passing , this consistently superb set was issued among other CDs with lost and never released treasures by Stax artists including Rufus Thomas, William Bell, and Booker T. All stack up with anything the label released during this time That is no small feat because this company literally did not put out a bad record in this prime period.
Also featured here is an inspired cover of Ben E. No guitar player in the history of popular music has been better playing behind vocalists than Cropper. This ranks with his best work supporting the likes of Otis Redding and Johnnie Taylor. Posted September 11, by mrdap in Soul , Stax. Artist……………: Betty Everett Album……………. On occasion, a musician, his accompaniment, and the engineering team recording the work, are so completely in sync that their performances are connected in a way that borders on telepathy.
Such was the case with the magic first album of Oscar Brown, Jr. At least two songs play on the cry of traditional Southern street vendors plying their trade from their wheeled carts. The song is certain to provoke thought, if not passionate reaction. Five unreleased tracks are added, four of which comprise an unsuccessful musical that Brown was working on.
This is an excellent, excellent jazz-blues album, which was not only a classic in its own right, but is made even more so by the addition of the five previously unreleased tracks made during the same sessions. Oscar Brown, Jr. A brilliant lyricist, a dramatic singer, and a highly individual genius in his own way, Brown performed a dozen memorable selections for this album.

Artist……………: Jon Lucian Album……………. I Am Now is the album that introduced the late West Indies singer, songwriter, guitarist, and arranger Jon Lucien to American audiences. The material on I Am Now is unlike anything else in his catalog. With its swirling strings, bossa guitars, smooth soul vocals, and lithe Caribbean rhythms, the song was a precursor to the kind of genre blending that is so prevalent in the 21st century.
That said, it is a small complaint. Posted September 4, by mrdap in Quiet Storm , Soul. Tagged with quiet storm , Soul. Artist……………: Jon Lucien Album……………. As the arranger here, Lucien also shows an immense capacity for melodies. Although this album has a few clunky danceable tracks, at this point, Lucien was much better at handling the ballads. The title track has Lucien playing the tortured romantic with a cinematic, emotion filled arrangement.
In the fall of , Rhino Records reissued Curtis with upgraded sound and nine bonus tracks that extended its running time to over 70 minutes. Posted August 27, by mrdap in Curtis Mayfield. Artist……………: The Whispers Album……………. Bonus Cut. It gives you an insight to their beginnings and the sound of 70s California Soul. Raw and somewhat rugged, one with a keen ear will be able to hear the beginnings of the smooth harmonies fleshing themselves out into what would later become a distinctive trademark for them.
Surprisingly, the album has a number of winners. The title tune tells a tale of what dependency on love can do to a man.
This pretty much sums up the entire album, almost to the point of overdosing on plea bargaining. The flow kind of take on a strange tone when Walter and Scotty begin to intermingle improvisational scats within the lyrics. Tagged with quiet storm , Soul , The Whispers. Artist……………: James Brown Album……………. Grindle Amazon. Even the most significant people in music have prime periods. He was in between two bands at this point but,as usual had no time to take stock. Everything from recording to personnel changes would have to happen en route between one date to another.
Business as usual for The Godfather. Having confronted political matters more directly during that time it seemed the right time for the Hardest Working Man In Show Business to begin working with what he did best: putting himself out there on the road and allowing his music to make his most important statements.
So the concert happened. Since James never did suffer fools lightly, there were all kinds of studio tracks and live tracks resulting from this transition. Much like Duke Ellington,James had a vast catalog of songs he was already doing and re-doing to adapt to new eras and new musics.
Somewhat a modern variation on his earlier instrumentals. He knew where his music came from. But at the same time he was looking to make sure nothing got in the way of the emphasis his music, which was funk, had on rhythm. Another thing to be noted here is the relatively easy going contrasts between the band transitions.
With the Bootsy era group,on tracks recorded live in Cincinatti, the horn section was pared down a little bit.me up into a ball as she spoon fed me a heaping plate of lovin’ soul, singing “Give” just to me. Gladys & The Pips’ “Come See About Me” pre-dates The Supremes’ hit and it’s a totally different song. Ain’t no Motown pop here. “Shoes” by Brook Benton is a clever tune describing a man trying to move on but he keeps going back.
